The Birth of Vision Malala

Soumitra Ray, a renound singer from Kolkata heard the story of Malala Yousafzai while touring the United States with his band Robi O Nobin in 2012. Malala, a young teenager from Pakistan spoke up against the Taliban ban of Female Education. She was shot in the head three times but survived and was brought to Birmingham, England for intensive rehabilitation where she resides now. This incident affected Soumitra deeply and inspired him to become an advocate for the empowerment of the girl child through education. With the money raised from all his USA concerts and Robi O Nobin's donations to the cause Soumitra created a Trust Fund and named it Vision Malala after the girl who inspired the whole world to speak up in favor of the Female Education and ended up winning the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 17, the youngest ever.

Vision Malala donated all it's monetary collection in 2012 to New Light Kolkata, a non-govermental organization. After that the news spread and some other Sponsors and volunteers became involved with the Trust. in 2013, Vision Malala adopted a Residential School for 100 Urban Deprived Girls of ages 4 to 14 in Kolkata. The School runs under partial financial supports by the Government.  A non-profit organization provides many other amenities for the residential part of the school. Still this school is in dire need of improvements in all areas in order to survive. Vision Malala has taken up this project with the goal of providing the girls with improved and healthier living environment for learning, so that they can become productive members of the society.

The adopted School is located near Jadavpur, Kolkata. There are 100 girls residing in the Dorm currently. These girls come from the lowest income families and many of them were being used as child laborers before the School started in 2013. Currently the School is upto 8th grade only. Vision Malala is paying for the private tutors for the 9th grade girls, so that they can sit for the Madhysmik Exam after finishing 10th grade. Our goal is to provide these girls with basic education.
